In the Fall of 2013, we checked in with our parish seminarians to see what's new during their studies and priestly formation. Here is what they had to share.
When did you begin/enroll in seminary and where are you in your studies now? I entered seminary directly after graduating from Zionsville Community High School. This past spring I finished my four years of college seminary at St. John Vianney College Seminary and graduated from the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, MN. I am now in my 5th year of seminary here at St. Meinrad Seminary in southern Indiana.
What is your favorite class? After reading atheistic philosophers for the last four years, it has been a joy to study theology. My favorite class is God and the human person (Theological Anthropology), in which we have pursued the reality that the human person is only understood in the light of Christ. Without Christ, we cannot live up to the fullness of our humanity. With Christ, we encounter human dignity.
How do you enjoy spending your free time at school? Reading books, smoking cigars, drinking whiskey, and playing the banjo (all at the same time).
Name one of your hobbies or talents. Golf.
What are you looking forward to the most this year? One more year closer to priesthood.
What is something that can be challenging in the life of a seminarian? Coming face to face with the fact that I am a sinner, yet called to be the presence of Jesus Christ in the modern world.
Are you reading any books right now? I am reading Pope Francis’ first encyclical, Lumen Fidei. It ain’t bad! I guess that’s why he’s the boss.
What is your favorite meal or food served at the college? When my parents come down and take me out to dinner. Enjoy hearing from James? Feel free to keep in touch and let him know of your prayers or wishes for him during his formation. Feel free to send any notes of encouragement to:
