2018 brought a beautiful addition to our altar in the form of seven vertical stained glass panels. They were conceived after much discussion by a group of parishioners led by Tish Cronin who offered to head up the Arts and Environment Ministry for Ordinary Time.
“We had a lot of good and varied ideas, then someone offered to donate some vintage glass panels for our project. The glass was dirty and old, but we saw the potential for beauty!” said Tish, who sketched the concept in just a few minutes.
She brought parishioner Mark Tobin on board, and in addition to providing much insight and knowledge regarding installation, he built the ironwork frames which mirror the ironwork on our stained glass windows.
The panels with their hues of creation draw our eye from the altar to the crucifix, enhancing our focus and prayer during the holy sacrifice of the Mass. Thanks to all who played a role in bringing this beautiful artwork to St. Alphonsus.
While the origin of the panels is virtually unknown (somewhere in Knox County), their new home will benefit from their restored beauty for years to come.
